Introduction

Going into this course with some previous ELL teaching experience but very little ESL theoretical knowledge, I now feel much more confident in my ability to help this group of students succeed. This is especially due to my much better understanding of the process that ELL go through in their language learning as well as in adjusting to a new culture. I have a deeper appreciation for the importance of connecting and adjusting learning to take into consideration the previous experiences of each individual student. I also have a better understanding of the elements of standard ELL programs in Ontario school including the initial assessment process and the STEP framework.

This course has given me a great opportunity to reflect on the kind of classroom environment that I want to provide to my ELL students that will help them feel engaged, empowered, and like they have a safe place to belong. I'm looking forward to having an opportunity to put this new knowledge and access to helpful resources to use to meet the needs of this growing and diverse group of learners!
