Assessing Language Skills

Assessing Language Skills (graphic organ

This is a graphic organizer that I created based on

this document which covers the basic process for ESL language assessment . This covers the initial interview and assessment process with details and a selection of  possible questions and key observation strategies. Creating this graphic gave me a much better understanding of the basic process for language assessment. The document it is based on also provides valuable assessment tools as well as links to additional resources on EduGAINS.  I think this task and this document is a great starting point for me to reference in the future when beginning the language assessment and STEPS placement process.

  • Signs around the school are in multiple languages, including all languages spoken by any students at the school.

  • There are meaningful connections between the school and the community. Groups feel comfortable using school facilities for various cultural and community events.

  • There is a clear procedure in place for ensuring parents have easy access to and awareness of the resources available to them.

  • There is a clear procedure for accessing and using interpreters, and this plan is easily accessible to parents and staff.

  • All staff are aware of their role in supporting a welcoming school environment.

  • Teachers and administrators are in regular and open communications with parents.

  • There is a clear procedure in place for when new family join the school community including:

    • A designated school ambassador.

    • A pamphlet with key information about the school in the family’s home language.

    • Intake interview to assess the needs of the family.

    • Orientation meeting to connect the family with needed resources and give them an overview of key information about the school.

Signs of a Welcoming School Environment

At left is a checklist of things I feel are important to look for when assessing whether a school is creating a welcoming environment for newcomers. I think this list is a useful guide because it gives specific steps and focusing on practicals procedures that should be in place. It is not enough to talk about principles and values, we have to turn these values into concrete actions that are clear and accessible to all parties involved. Making sure that everyone knows their role and where to find resources and support to fulfill their role is key to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
