This is a tip sheet for developing the liteeracy skills of ELLs. I created this to be an easy-to understand basic tip sheet that had guiding principles as well as strategies to keep in mind while helping ELL students develop their literacy skills. This is intented to be accessible to both parents and teachers.
I selected this artifact because I think it clearly outlines important principles for literacy development and because I had not heard the reading process describes in stages like this before and this really resonated with me. Going forward I want to put this new knowledge into practice by being thoughtful of the time I am giving students to go through each stage of this process. I want to be mindful how this will affect their success and comfort during reading and discussion tasks.
For this artifact, I've chosen to include an integrated lesson plan that uses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as a Google Form with criteria that I feel are important for a successful ESL lesson. I found these two exercises to very helpful in seeing the theoretical ideas made practical.
I intend to use the lesson plan template in the future as way to reflect on the language demands of a lesson because it includes additional sections addressing these components. I also think this Google Form could be used as a great self-reflection tool when considering past or future lesson to assess how well they meet these key criteria.
